Before — what we said

At 11:00 UTC on Sept 17 the BoE publishes the Official Bank Rate alongside the Monetary Policy Summary and the MPC vote split. Consensus: hold at 3.75%, votes 3-0-6 — identical to last time on both lines. The live variable is therefore not the rate but the vote column: 3 of 9 members are already voting to HIKE, and the meeting lands the day after the Fed hiked. We deliberately leave gold out of the calls: across the last 13 BoE prints, gold's release-day range is 0.86x a normal day — BoE days are quieter than average for gold, even though its dollar channel is open. Gold's binding constraint right now is real yields, not sterling.

The macro picture right now

Markets arrive with the price of money at extremes: US 2y at 4.65% (z +2.71) and 10y real yields at 2.60% (z +2.53). That sets a very high bar for what counts as "hawkish" enough to lift any currency against the dollar. MOVE at 83.709, up 7.569 points over five sessions (z +1.19): rate volatility is expanding, so the same vote-split surprise travels further in FX than it would have a month ago. The decisive paradox sits in the dollar itself: broad USD at 118.213, z -1.32 — a weak dollar while US rates sit at the year's highs. The rates-FX link is broken, so a sterling impulse routed into the dollar basket arrives thinner than theory allows. On the EUR side, speculative positioning is -4.522% OI (z -1.23) but has been trimmed by 2.74 points in five sessions: a crowded short, the kind of book where even a modest dollar move turns into squeeze pressure. EURUSD at 1.1539 with H4 RSI 31.5 sits exactly there, while DXY at 99.736 is still +0.98% on the week.

How the last print went

The Bank Rate series is six consecutive 25bp cuts: 5.00% (Aug 2024) → 4.75% → 4.50% → 4.25% → 4.00% → 3.75% (Dec 18, 2025). Nine months unchanged since — the series only marks changes, so that gap is precisely where the easing cycle stopped. The direction of risk has flipped too: the last meeting carried 3 votes to hike and none to cut. Same-lane clues lean toward the hawkish bloc holding or thickening: the ECB just raised the deposit rate 25bp to 2.5% with officials already pointing at October, the BOJ cut JGB holdings by a record ¥47.8tn in the year to July, and WTI is +17.59% over a month, feeding straight into UK headline CPI. Where this clue can fail: we have no UK leading indicator with a fitted coefficient to Bank Rate, so the ECB and BOJ are G4 context rather than a forecast function for the MPC — and that same oil shock is exactly the argument the six-member majority uses to hold. No prior print of this event has been scored by us.

What it reaches, and how

The event runs on the USD-strength lane, but its currency is GBP — one component of the dollar basket, so the only causal chain is: vote split → GBP → dollar index → our assets. BTC: this lane is the one currently driving BTC (dxy r=-0.43 ±0.11), so the pipe is direct, and the last 13 BoE prints show release-day range at 1.33x a normal day. But options are not pricing the event: DVOL 38.86 (z -0.62) and funding at 0.395‱ (z -0.28) both say there is no leverage queued up to be unwound — any reaction is a dollar-driven drift, not a liquidation chain. EURUSD: its 1.41x ratio is the highest of the three, yet no axis clears the noise floor in the correlation table for it. Those two facts only reconcile through the EUR/GBP detour — the BoE reaches EUR via the cross, which daily dollar correlations do not capture. So our EURUSD direction is an inference from the cross, not a fitted coefficient, and we say so.

Scenarios when the number lands

Three branches, only ONE happens. Each carries its own numeric threshold and an expected direction per asset.

  1. Numbered threshold

Bank Rate held at 3.75% AND MPC votes exactly 3-0-6 (3 hike – 0 cut – 6 hold)

    If this branch plays out:▬gold▼BTC▼EUR55%likelihood

Hold with the vote split unchanged and no shift in the Summary tone: the GBP-to-dollar pipe closes within hours and each asset returns to its own axis — EURUSD to the French-German spread it carries alone, BTC to the 77,655 shelf it just broke. This branch generates no new information, which is exactly why it carries the most weight.

  2. Numbered threshold

Bank Rate at 4.00% (25bp hike), OR held at 3.75% with ≥ 4 votes to hike (4-0-5 or wider)

    If this branch plays out:▬gold▲BTC▲EUR32%likelihood

The hike bloc widens, or the BoE moves outright: a firmer sterling drags the dollar basket lower into a crowded EUR short, making this the only branch that FLIPS our bearish EURUSD stance inside the scoring window. BTC catches the same dollar move through its negative DXY coefficient, but enough to reach resistance, not to repair the weekly structure.

  3. Numbered threshold

Held at 3.75% with ≤ 2 votes to hike (2-0-7 or fewer), OR at least 1 vote to cut appears

    If this branch plays out:▼gold▼BTC▼EUR13%likelihood

The hawkish bloc shrinks or a cut vote appears: the BoE steps out of the ECB and BOJ tightening rhythm, a softer sterling lifts the dollar basket just as US real yields sit at their highs. This branch adds to the downside already in train rather than creating it, and is the only one that reopens gold's dollar channel to the downside.

Where we commit — and what would prove us wrong

Unlike the branches above, these carry no “if”. They are the lines graded against real prices below, and they are never edited after the print.

  • EUR/USDBEARISHConviction 6/10

Invalidated if: EURUSD trades above 1.1544 (4-touch resistance) within 4 hours of the release

  • BitcoinBEARISHConviction 4/10

Invalidated if: BTC reclaims 76,169 (9-touch resistance) and closes an H4 candle above it after the release

Read the vote column before the rate line: a fourth vote to hike turns an unchanged meeting into a tightening meeting, and it is the only threshold in this release capable of reversing EURUSD within the session.

After — were we right

Official Bank Rate came in at 3.75% against a 3.75% forecast — a 0.00-point surprise on the rate line (source: Bank of England, series IUDBEDR, period Sept 16, 2026). The MPC vote split is not in the agency data we hold; posts on X (source: x_influencer) report 3 members voting to hike to 4%, i.e. the 3-0-6 that was forecast — social media, not an official number. Price from the 11:00 UTC mark: EURUSD barely moved, +0.039% after four hours, extremes of +0.169% and -0.09% around 1.1478. BTC popped +0.547% within an hour and gave it all back, -0.068% at the H4 mark (high +1.018%, low -0.526%). Gold — the asset we deliberately left out of the calls — travelled furthest: +0.877% after four hours, +1.331% at its widest from 4,323.816.

Two calls scored, none hit. EURUSD (bearish, confidence 6) and BTC (bearish, confidence 4) both landed flat: price never travelled far enough to confirm or refute either direction. 0 of 2 is the honest tally. Our EURUSD invalidation at 1.1544 held, but that earns nothing — price reached only about 1.1497, so the kill-line we published sat outside what this event could reach and did no work. The BTC invalidation could not be re-read; we say nothing about it. The scenario box is empty: the reaction leaned to no branch, with 1 of 3 assets agreeing with the nearest one. Right: options were not pricing the event, and BTC drifted with the dollar and handed it back. Miss: we left gold out, and gold was the only asset with a real range.

The solid line is real price (15-minute bars). The vertical rule is when the news landed. The coloured dashed line is what we said BEFOREHAND: how far price would go, in which direction, by the grading mark — the gap between the two lines is our error. For a neutral call the promise is the shaded box: price had to STAY inside it. Each panel has its own scale, so read the % beside each asset name rather than comparing panel heights.

  • BitcoinBEARISHflat (below threshold)-0.07%

Each row: the call we published before the event → the REAL price change measured 4 hours after the moment that moves price.

Published invalidation levels: EUR/USD — intact

Ahead: The BoE now leaves the calendar and the sterling-to-dollar pipe closed, as the heaviest branch described, so the view ahead does not come from the UK. EURUSD stays bearish, confidence 6, on Fed-ECB front-end divergence rather than the MPC. BTC neutral 5: leverage flushed, vol compressed. Gold bullish 5 — this print says gold is running on its own axis. New variable: Brent has turned lower (source: x_influencer), thinning the CPI argument the MPC hawks lean on, but that only bites at the next meeting.
